When you walk in to see the fun, bright walls and decor of the Taco City restaurant located at 220 S. Indiana Avenue in Sellersburg, you know without a doubt you are going to enjoy genuine Mexican cuisine. That is exactly what Delfino Santiago delivers to his customers. Coming from humble beginnings and a family of 12 siblings, Delfino learned at a very young age how important hard work and good family cooking was. The idea of opening up a restaurant was always an idea, but never a priority. He didn't think it was something he could do. "I just wanted to come here and get ahead in life. I never imagined I'd own a restaurant!" shared Delfino. As he worked other jobs, he found the traditional home-cooked food he had grown up eating and enjoying was missing from the area. Delfino says he is self-taught and uses only fresh and unique ingredients.
After running the successful Mexico City restaurant (located in Jeffersonville) for many years, Delfino wanted to continue to provide delicious Mexican meal options to the residents of Clark County and beyond… but in a new, convenient location. So, he made the move to Sellersburg. He tells Foodie Finder that the move was good for him and he couldn’t be happier with the new restaurant “regulars” and how friendly and welcoming the community has been. Taco City offers new mouth-watering recipes and a whole new experience.
Delfino loves experimenting with flavors. Things have certainly worked out and it comes down to the homemade taste you will experience in each meal. "I tried out a lot of different recipes until I found what tastes great. It wasn't easy," says Delfino. He also called home to Mexico a few times to ask how to make things. Taco City provides menu choices that you will not find in southern Indiana. Things like gorditas, sopés, and authentic Mexican soups. The gordita is built with homemade tortillas, meat of your choosing, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and sour cream. The sopé looks like a thick tortilla with vegetables and meat toppings. The base is made from a circle of fried masa (ground maize soaked in lime) with pinched sides creating a bowl like shape. It is then topped with refried black beans, crumbled cheese, lettuce, onions, salsa, and sour cream. Sometimes meat is also added to create different tastes and styles of sopés. Other favorites include tortas (a Spanish sandwich), tacos, quesadillas, and fajitas. In addition to the traditional food, they also serve traditional Mexican drinks like horchata (a rice milk with cinnamon), agua de jamaica (a sweet hibiscus flower drink) and soft drinks.
On Tuesdays, they offer a special of three Mexican tacos (steak or chicken) for $5.00 and offer $5.00 burritos on Thursdays. Taco City is open 10 am - 9 pm Monday through Thursday and 10 am – 10 pm Friday through Sunday. They offer dine-in and carryout. The next time you have a craving for good, fresh, authentic Mexican food, this is a place to try… and, they have a friendly and doting staff to boot!
