Uncommon Cups & Cones

There’s no greater feeling than when your dreams come true. Kim Barbour was able to feel that feeling in October of 2018 when she and her sister-in-law, Joanne Kiefer, opened their very own ice cream shop in New Albany. Kim has always dreamt of having her very own restaurant and/or dessert shop. When the opportunity came along, Kim immediately knew what kind of ice cream she wanted to serve in her shop. She was inspired by a downtown eatery in St. Louis that Kim and her family had experienced about seven years ago. They are giving a new twist to getting a sweet treat in uptown New Albany. “Joanne is the brains behind the business. I couldn’t have done this without her,” Kim said.

Since their opening, Kim and Joanne have added a bit of nostalgia to getting a cup of ice cream with their unique cups and ice cream flavors. They offer 28 flavors of super premium ice cream which they serve inside of a tea cup. They have more than 300 antique tea cups that are all different. With unique flavors and a welcoming atmosphere, what’s not to love? “We strive to have a warm and cozy atmosphere. Hopefully like stepping back in time,” Kim said.

When you visit Uncommon Cups and Cones, you may be a little overwhelmed, but in the best of ways due to all the flavor options that are offered. Not only do they have a variety of flavors, they also offer specialty items as well! You can enjoy a Hot Chocolate Float which is hot chocolate with a scoop of ice cream, topped with whipped cream or marshmallows. They recommend you try Toasted Mallow S’mores or Mint Avalanche for your scoop of ice cream. You can order the Ice Cream Social which is their version of a banana split; three flavors of ice cream, three toppings, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry on top. Still can’t decide what to order? Try their Flight – a sampling of eight flavors!

Uncommon Cups and Cones just received four new flavors as well: Munchie Madness, Lemon Poppy Seed, Cookie Dough and Coconut Almond Bliss. If you are not able to eat dairy, they offer two non-dairy options: Black Cherry Soy and Lemon Raspberry Ice. If you think it’s still too cold out to enjoy a scoop of ice cream, don’t worry! They even offer hot chocolate, apple cider, coffee and even a large selection of teas as well!

Not only do they serve their ice cream in unique tea cups, but they also have cake cones, sugar cones, fresh-made waffle cones and even to-go cups! You can top off your delicious scoop of uniquely flavored ice cream with one (or many) of the 33 topping options that they have!

Ice cream makes everything better, right? Contact Uncommon Cups and Cones to cater your next wedding, birthday, meeting, realtor event or any upcoming celebration you may have planned! They also have a meeting room called the Upper Room which holds about 20 people – perfect for birthdays, meetings, group study sessions and more.

“We love being a part of the revitalization of Uptown New Albany. We have a lot of fun talking with people, hearing stories and learning more about the history of our community,” Joanne said. Uncommon Cups and Cones is located at 518 Vincennes Street in New Albany. You may recognize their location, as Kim’s mother formerly had Box of Chocolates, a consignment shop at the same location.
