Sam's Food & Spirits

Home cooking with people that feel like family has become an increasingly popular trend in the Southern Indiana area, but Sam’s Food & Spirits was one of the first to run with it in the late 80’s. In 1985, Sam Anderson opened on Charlestown Road in New Albany, one of the first restaurants in what was an underdeveloped area at the time. Sam’s became the go-to location and in 1991, opened a second store in Floyds Knobs at Highlander Point. The location began in the strip mall and then moved to its current, stand-alone building eight years ago in April of 2010. Following a 2013 fire at New Albany, Sam’s relocated to the Montrose building in Clarksville. That location has since closed. Sam’s home is now Highlander Point.

Sam’s is a unique spot in Southern Indiana. Known for a variety of seafoods, including seasonal oysters, chicken tenders, pot roast and the hot brown, the restaurant’s  employees are always welcoming and accommodating to everyone that comes through their doors – whether they’ve known them  their entire lives or a few minutes.

“Southern Indiana is a gateway for people traveling to Louisville and people are always looking for the small, local restaurants when they go out of town. You can get McDonald’s just about anywhere, but there’s just nothing like us,” Anderson said.

Sam’s has found that their seafood, especially their fish, is popular year-round and not just during the Lenten season. The fish is served broiled, fried or even blackened. In the 80’s, Sam’s was actually one of the first to offer blackened fish in the Southern Indiana area and it has since become a staple for seafood lovers.

With warmer weather right around the corner, people are going to want to sit outside and enjoy time with their family and friends. Sam’s Food & Spirits has a patio area that is pet-friendly. That’s right – you can even bring your best bud with you when you go to eat! Be sure to keep an eye out for summer seasonal menu items that will be making their way to Sam’s before we know it.

Although Sam’s Food & Spirits is geared more toward the Baby Boomer generation, they have found that they are becoming a family tradition in the Southern Indiana area.

“The kids and the grandkids of the Boomer generation are bringing their parents and grandparents here to eat because this is where they went as kids. They grew up with us,” Anderson said.

He mentioned that they are lucky to have the customers they do. According to Anderson, 90% of the clientele are returning customers. “They have stayed with us through the fire and through the moves, we are blessed to have such a good following,” Anderson said, adding that the internet has helped create new customers traveling Interstate 64, who are also becoming return visitors.
